The Suape Container Terminal (Tecon) is further proof that the port complex is one of the most modern in Brazil. Besides consolidating Suape as the most important hub and distributing port in the Northeast Region, Tecon has helped place the complex in a position to dispute the marketplace with the Port of Santos, the most important port in the country.

Tecon is controlled by the Suape Port Container Terminal Company, a subsidiary of the International Container Terminal Service (ICTSI), which invested US$ 20 million in the enterprise. The foreign group won the contract when the State Government promoted the solicitation of bids in 2001 for the utilization of the port terminal and is in charge of controlling the area for a period of 30 years.

The ICTSI - International Container Terminal Service Incorporated - is a Phillipine group and one of the largest container terminal operators, with facilities in several countries throughout the world. The presence of the terminal strengthens Suape’s goal to become a hub port concentrating and distributing cargo in the Southern Atlantic. It is a bold project and in full swing.

With 660 meters of docks in an area of 280 thousand square meters, Suape Tecon has the capacity to move up to 400 thousand containers per year. In the future, this figure could reach an annual movement of up to 1.5 million containers.

In 2002, which was the first year of operations, Suape Tecon broadened a number of facilities due to the overwhelming demand. The inner terminal patio has an area of 34 thousand square meters. Equipment operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and includes the following:

• two portainers, with a capacity of 40 tons and 25 moves per hour;
• two transtainers, with a capacity of 35 tons;
• five reach stackers for 45 tons;
• four top loaders, two for 35 tons and two for 40 tons;
• three side lifters for moving empty containers and three fork lifts with a capacity of up to 7.5 tons.

The terminal also has a customs area, draft of 15.5 meters, five pilers, CFS, and 291 reefer plugs. Control and planning of the patio and ships is carried out on the Navis software program, integrating the customs office activities in the terminal area for the verification of merchandise, cargo weight for shipping over roads, etc.

Tecon is located at the convergence point of the main commercial maritime routes on the east coast of South America and other continents, as well as the coastal traffic lanes connecting the South Region of Brazil to the North and Northeast Regions. It has direct access to the main roadways of the state of Pernambuco, BR 101 and BR 232, as well as a railway line connecting the terminal to the Northeast Railway Company system.

Suape Tecon enables its clients to make use of perfect transportation multimodality, including a railway platform inside its area connected by access lines to the main roads and railways of the region. This allows the offer of complementary services and synergy with the logistic needs of importers and exporters, adding further value to its operations

The facility also includes the following attributes:

• Customs office of the Suape Complex;
• Federal Revenue Service depot for inspection and storage;
• depot for loose cargo;
• equipment maintenance depot;
• towers with 286 reefer plugs, 50 for PTI and either in construction or in the project phase in accordance with demands.

The communications and information systems were specially developed for this type of operation. The CTS system of data processing, integrated to the SPARCS/NAVIS software program for control and planning of the patio and ships, offers the reliability of information in real time.

In the process of ISO 9001/2000 certification, Suape Tecon has the most advanced equipment in the region for receiving, expediting, handling and storing containerized cargo.
